On this day, I headed to Ha Long Bay, a World Heritage site I had long been curious about. The photos I had seen of its surreal rock formations always felt otherworldly, and it was a place I had hoped to witness with my own eyes someday.

As we approached Ha Long Bay, the scent of the sea breeze and the faint silhouettes of distant rocks slowly emerged. In that moment, my excitement for the upcoming cruise surged all at once.

In this article, I’ll share the charm and highlights of Ha Long Bay as I experienced them during the tour.

Vietnam Hanoi Travel Guide: A Perfect One-Day Itinerary for Exploring the Old Quarter
My first visit to Hanoi left me with a strange sense of nostalgia. Walking through the Old Quarter, the constant hum of …

What Is Ha Long Bay?

Ha Long Bay (Ha Long Bay) is one of Vietnam’s most popular destinations, located in Quang Ninh Province in the northern part of the country. With easy access from Hanoi—about 2.5 to 3 hours by car—it’s a convenient spot even for a day trip, making it a classic choice for first-time visitors to Vietnam.

The name “Ha Long” comes from Vietnamese, where Ha means “descending” and Long means “dragon.” It originates from a legend that tells of a dragon descending from the sky to protect this land. When the dragon landed in the sea, it is said that its tail carved through the water, creating the unique rock formations that exist today. This mythical background adds an even more enchanting atmosphere to Ha Long Bay.

The most distinctive feature of the bay is its landscape of roughly 1,600 limestone islands scattered across the water. Various rock formations rise dramatically from the sea, and when mist settles over the area, the scenery becomes even more dreamlike. These formations were created over tens of millions of years through tectonic shifts and erosion, making the bay a grand piece of natural art shaped slowly over time.

The unique terrain and beautiful scenery of Ha Long Bay were highly valued, and in 1994 it was designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The reasons for its inscription are mainly the following two points.

  • Scenic value: an unparalleled natural beauty created by the harmony of the rock formations and the sea
  • Geological value: a limestone karst landscape formed over an extremely long period of time

Ha Long Bay is also frequently featured as a filming location for movies and television programs, giving it worldwide recognition as a tourist destination. In addition to enjoying the leisurely views of the rock formations from a cruise ship, visitors can also explore caves, try kayaking, and participate in activities that allow them to immerse themselves in nature. Tours that visit floating villages offer a glimpse into the lives of people who live in harmony with the sea, revealing the deeper charm of Ha Long Bay beyond its breathtaking scenery.

Often referred to as “the Guilin of the Sea,” this place is not only visually stunning but also a special area where visitors can feel the history and mystery of nature. It is truly a one‑of‑a‑kind destination that should be included in any trip to Vietnam.

Ha Long Bay Cruise Experience

The Ha Long Bay cruise offered a sense of quiet grandeur that guidebooks alone could never fully convey. The slow passage of the boat between the towering rock formations became one of the most memorable moments of the trip. From here, I’ll share what the one‑day cruise was actually like and what I experienced along the way.

Departing from Hanoi for a One‑Day Cruise Tour

The tour I joined this time was a one‑day cruise from Hanoi booked through KKday. Ha Long Bay can be fully enjoyed even on a day trip, making it an easy option for travelers with tight schedules.

In the morning, while I waited in the hotel lobby, a staff member from the tour came to pick me up. Since hotel pickup is included, it’s reassuring even for first‑time visitors to Vietnam who may not be familiar with the area.

From Hanoi, I rode on a shared bus with participants from other tours different from mine. With a restroom break along the way, we arrived at the port in about three hours. When we reached the port, it was already bustling with many tourists, giving a clear sense of Ha Long Bay’s popularity. While the guide handled the boarding procedures, I chatted casually with other travelers as we waited for departure.

Lunch on Board and a Scenic Cruise

This tour included lunch served during the cruise. When we boarded, the dishes were already set on the table, allowing us to enjoy the meal while admiring the stunning views of Ha Long Bay together with other participants. Sharing travel stories over lunch created a pleasant sense of camaraderie, as if we were companions experiencing the same moment.

After finishing lunch, we headed to the deck. As the boat slowly moved forward, limestone formations began appearing one after another before our eyes, revealing a landscape that felt like stepping into another world. Please enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Ha Long Bay.

Along the way, you can see “Fighting Cock Islet,” also known as “Kissing Rocks,” which is considered a symbol of Ha Long Bay. It is so famous that it is even depicted on the back of Vietnam’s 200,000‑dong banknote, and many tourists stopped to take photos of it.

Boarding the Rowboat

During the cruise, there is an activity where you leave the main boat once and transfer to either a rowboat or a kayak. Kayaking requires paddling on your own and offers the fun of exploring freely, but according to the guide, it is quite challenging and you may get very wet. In fact, the Western travelers who chose kayaks ended up completely soaked.

On the other hand, the rowboat accommodates several passengers and is gently paddled by a local boatman. I chose the rowboat for safety, and it turned out to be the right decision. The ride was stable, allowing me to enjoy the scenery comfortably, and the boatman even pointed out good photo spots. Drifting between the rock formations was incredibly relaxing.

Passing through a cave on the rowboat leads to a quiet space surrounded by sheer cliffs, creating the feeling of having wandered into nature’s secret hideout. The water was astonishingly calm, and the light reflecting off the rock surfaces made the place incredibly beautiful.

Exploring the Sung Sot Cave

After landing on the island, we headed toward the cave exploration. Ha Long Bay has several caves, such as Sung Sot Cave, Thien Cung Cave, and Dau Go Cave, but on this tour we visited Sung Sot Cave.

Sung Sot Cave is considered the most magnificent and most popular cave in Ha Long Bay. Its vast chambers and beautiful stalactite formations make it one of the highlights of visiting this World Heritage site. The interior was far larger than I had imagined, with sunlight streaming in at certain points and illuminated stalactites creating a mystical atmosphere. Being able to experience not only the scenery from the boat but also the natural formations up close while walking through the cave is one of the greatest charms of Ha Long Bay.

Summary of the Ha Long Bay Cruise

This cruise offered a journey filled with variety—from the iconic limestone formations of Ha Long Bay to the rowboat cave exploration and the walk through Sung Sot Cave. Moving close to the limestone islands scattered across the water gave a sense of both power and tranquility that photos alone cannot capture, and the way the scenery changed little by little as the boat advanced was truly memorable.

Although the time spent in Ha Long Bay was only about four hours, which may sound short at first, the experience was so rich that the time passed quickly. The moments drifting between the rock formations, the silence inside the caves, and the dynamic beauty of the stalactites each showed a completely different side of the bay, leaving no room for boredom.

It was surprisingly satisfying for a day trip, offering just the right amount of content to fit easily into a travel itinerary. Even for a first-time visitor to Vietnam, it felt like an accessible yet fully immersive scenic experience—one I would highly recommend.

Important Tips for Visiting Ha Long Bay

The Ha Long Bay cruise offers stunning scenery and engaging activities, making it a destination that even first‑time visitors to Vietnam can enjoy with confidence. However, since the tour includes moments off the boat—such as exploring caves—there are a few things worth knowing in advance to make the experience more comfortable. Here, I’ll share some tips that I personally found helpful during the trip.

Wear Shoes That Are Comfortable and Slip‑Resistant

Sightseeing in Ha Long Bay is mainly spent on the cruise ship or the rowboat. However, some tours include cave exploration, and the path leading to the cave consists of slopes and stairs.

Inside the cave, the ground can be damp and slippery, and many areas have steep inclines. For this reason, I strongly recommend wearing comfortable, slip‑resistant shoes such as sneakers.

While you can technically participate wearing sandals or leather shoes, you will need to pay much more attention to your footing inside the cave, which can greatly affect your comfort. Choosing shoes that are easy to walk in will help you enjoy the experience safely and with peace of mind.

Bring Insect Repellent Spray

Mosquitoes are especially common on the islands where the caves are located. While there is almost no risk of insect bites on the cruise ship, mosquitoes may start gathering around you the moment you step onto the island, so insect repellent spray is essential.

Tours generally do not provide insect repellent. For this reason, I recommend applying it thoroughly as soon as you arrive at the cave island before beginning your walk.

Mosquitoes tend to increase toward late afternoon, so bringing a long‑sleeved layer will give you extra peace of mind.

That concludes the content introduced in this article. The scenery of Ha Long Bay had a quiet yet powerful presence that felt far too special to be summed up simply as “beautiful.” The sound of the wind passing between the rock formations, the soft light filtering into the caves, and the slow passage of time on the boat were all moments that can only be experienced while traveling.

If you plan to visit Hanoi, I highly recommend taking a trip to Ha Long Bay. Even a day trip is more than enough to enjoy it, and adding it to your itinerary will deepen the overall impression of your journey. For those who think, “I’d like to go someday,” this is the perfect time to include it as a candidate for your next trip. The serene scenery created by the sea and the limestone formations will surely leave an unforgettable memory in your travels.
